Legal aspects of LPG Autogas Conversion

Insurance
There are a few aspects to consider when owning an LPG converted car, The most obvious is Insurance, not so long ago there were very few brokers that would even consider putting an LPG converted car on their books. Thankfully, all that has changed now, and a quick search on the net will provide you with plenty of leads. A good site to start your search would be the UKLPG website (see our links page), this is the site of our governing body, and has all sorts of information for the new or established LPG consumer.

It's now very easy to get insurance cover these days, but don't forget to tell your insurer that your car has been converted to LPG, this can be as simple as picking up the phone and telling them.

Safety Certification
Some insurers insist on an LPGA installation certificate, this is a certificate that confirms that the vehicle has been converted by a qualified installer, and conforms to the LPGA codes of practice on installation.

This ensures that the technician that installed the LPG equipment has passed the relevant tests and is qualified to install in a safe and proper manner.

If the certificate of installation gets lost or you buy a vehicle without one then a duplicate is not possible, However a safety certificate will do the same job and can easily be obtained from any LPGA approved installer.

Road Tax
Another aspect of this is the good old Road fund licence or car tax. The bane of the motorist, but there is one advantage to be had here. Vehicles converted to LPG can be declared to DVLA and get your Road Tax reduced by about £20 a year.
